Statues Stolen!
ORIGINAL POST
On March 4, 2026, two statues were forcibly removed from the front of the church by a man who arrived on a skateboard just before 4:00 AM.
These statues have adorned the facade of the church since 1928, shortly after we opened with only a basement church in 1924. When the present church was completed in 1943, these saints continued to adorn the facade and welcome everyone here. They are priceless.
We are seeking the public’s help to recover the statues. Please see the photos below and refer to local news coverage as linked. Anyone with information may contact Fr. Paul at church, or Denver Police at District 6.
Updates
As of May 18, 2026:
The prime suspect is set to be arraigned in county court on May 29. We have filed for restitution of the $1,000 deductible that we will pay out of pocket, but it will depend on final pleas and sentencing whether it is ordered and paid back. Last week, we signed a contract to repair and restore the statues and install them into our facade. The balance of this work will be paid by our fine art insurance carrier. We do not know how long the work will take to get it right, but we have confidence in the sculptor and team that it will be done well and securely. We will plan a dedication and thanksgiving ceremony upon completion of this work.
As of March 23, 2026:
Denver Police took the suspect into custody.
As of March 16, 2026:
Denver Police have issued a warrant for the suspect who had the statues in his possession last week.
As of March 13, 2026:
Repair estimates are in excess of $4,000. Replacement estimates are in excess of $20,000. The investigation is ongoing as far as the prosecution of the culprit.
As of March 11, 2026:
We have recovered the statues of St. Paul and St. Rita that were stolen from the front of our church. They were located but were already cut up to be sold for their metal value. Now the careful work of restoration and the diligent process of prosecution can be undertaken, as the investigation and any charges are still pending.
